About the Firm

Friendly, long-established, modern, traditional; just some of our qualities.

Founded in 1893 by Sir Herbert Carden, described by the historian, Timothy Carder, as "perhaps the greatest figure in Brighton's civic history " the firm has been based in its office in Old Steyne since 1897.

Our other founding partner Charles Burt Brill was from a well known Brighton family.

We value our history but we are not old fashioned.

We have a long commitment to technology from the first telephone in Brighton, and our number used to be Brighton 1, via working with standard letters since the 1960s, to our present cloud computing system and our plans to increase virtualisation in the firm.

Our driving force is a commitment to people:

  • to our clients delivering value for money expert legal advice on-time
  • to the people who work in the firm, through training and career development

We have a wide range of interesting clients (from a University to first-time buyers) across the four main legal teams; commercial, litigation and family, private client and property.

We pride ourselves that we provide pro bono work for those in need, reduced price work for charities as well as paid for advice to many individuals, families and HNWIs.

The connecting thread is providing legal advice to people and organisations who need to work with a trusted advisor

If you are friendly, enthusiastic, committed, principled and want to work in a ‘can-do’ atmosphere then talk to us; we are ready to listen.
