Employment discrimination can come in many forms, and often it is not as obvious as you would first imagine.

Under the Equality Act 2010 – all previous laws, regulations and agreements based on employment discrimination were brought together in a single piece of legislation – but what does that mean for you, and what’s the best way of going about acting in the face of discrimination in the workplace?
The law and legislation that exists in this country to protect people from employment discrimination includes factors such as unfair dismissal, redundancy and fair training opportunities. Often for many people however, employment discrimination is outside of this remit and classes as unfair treatment, victimisation or harassment. It can be difficult to speak up when confronted with this, but it is important to let your employer know when you have been discriminated against.
At first, read the employee handbook and pursue internal routes – many employers have established anti-discrimination policies which should tell you how to report any issues. The human resources department in your workplace should also be able to report or file any issues.
This shouldn’t be the end of what your employer can do for you in terms of preventing discrimination at work. The law is there to protect employees but also to inform companies – if you feel that you have been wrongly treated there should be an ability to take your grievance further up the hierarchy in your company. Many larger businesses will employ a dedicated equality manager, but bear in mind however that a claim can be dismissed if it not presented to your employer in writing within three months of the discrimination.
